March

"March winds do blow, and we shall have snow...." And we did. Mountains and piles and drifts and lovely whiteness. Then gone. Melted in five days. Two days of Spring warmth....the snowdrops popping, the Winter Aconite small suns under the bud-swelling lilacs. Then, rain to sleet to snow again. Hey! It's March.

Blood of Trees

Outside my February window waters stir and rise.  From depths unfathomed under frozen sod, they climb.  Impassioned impulse joins atom to atom, droplet to droplet, through rootlet, trunk, then branch and twig.  Up and up!  Through the ghostly living tissue of ancient maple courses the sweet fluid, then drip, drip to earth's surface.  Spring rises with the flood.

Winter has been long and trying, this year.  Finally, this week, we will be above freezing consistently during the day.  Hurray!
